We are committed to providing accurate, reliable and timely clinical diagnostic results towards improved treatment, monitoring and management of clients seeking healthcare services.

Ndlovu Laboratories is situated in the rural community of Elandsdoorn, Dennilton, in the Limpopo Province. We are committed to providing accurate, reliable and timely clinical diagnostic results towards improved treatment, monitoring and management of clients seeking healthcare services. We are passionate about ensuring that rural communities have access to high quality laboratory diagnostic services. In addition to diagnostic testing, our laboratory is also involved in clinical trial studies and academic research. More information on our clinical trials and research programs can be found here. Our Staff complement includes Medical Technologists and Scientists, Research Scientists and Assistants and Administrative Personnel. All our diagnostic and administrative staff are GCP, GCLP and IATA trained and certified and we are in the process of obtaining SANAS accreditation.

Laboratory Services

Ndlovu Laboratories offers routine clinical pathology diagnostic testing towards enabling healthcare practitioners achieve optimal patient care. All diagnostic tests performed in the laboratory are carefully monitored and quality controlled. The vast majority of requested tests are performed in house on site. In the unlikely event that testing capacity is lacking in the laboratory, these few tests are referred to other accredited laboratories for processing. Currently, our pathology testing disciplines include:

Chemistry

This pathology discipline focuses on analysis of blood, urine, and bodily fluids for diagnostic, monitoring and therapeutic purposes. Our laboratory utilizes highly automated chemistry analysers and rapid point of care analysers for chemistry testing. Our chemistry pathology services include biochemistry, endocrinology, serology and toxicology testing, among others.

Haematology

This pathology diagnostic area involves testing for clinical conditions related to the blood and its components (e.g. blood cells, and coagulation factors). We employ automated and manual systems for haematology testing.

Molecular Biology

Molecular diagnostics comprises detecting and quantifying genetic components of infectious agents such as viruses and bacteria towards establishing infections in patients. This discipline also involves identifying molecular markers of genetic diseases, hereditary abnormalities and pathologies and characterizing genetic compositions of individuals and other organisms. Our laboratory has the capacity for fully automated PCR- and cell-based techniques for molecular diagnostic testing.

Microbiology

Microbiology is a field of medicine involved with diagnosing and treating infectious diseases caused by micro-organisms including bacteria, mycobacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites through examination (analysis) of samples (urines, stool, sputa etc.). In addition to detecting and identifying microorganisms in clinical samples, this discipline also includes characterizing antimicrobial sensitivity and susceptibility profiles of the identified microorganisms.

Further information on diagnostic microbiology is available here and here.

Clinical Trials

A clinical trial or study is any investigation in human participants intended to evaluate clinical effects, properties, safety and/or efficacy of an investigational product or medical intervention, including any adverse reactions the investigational product or intervention may have. Clinical trial research is important for the advancement of the healthcare and science and development. Ndlovu Laboratories is involved in a number of clinical trials and many of these clinical trials are also simultaneously conducted in other centres in South Africa and/or other centres in Europe, South America, North and Central America and Asia. Ndlovu strives to maintain the highest international standards of clinical trial research. All clinical trials we are involved in have the necessary approval of local, regional, national and international regulatory authorities, including the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and Human Research Ethics Committees (HRECs) to ensure that human rights, safety, privacy and confidentiality of study participants are never compromised. Ndlovu Laboratories leverages its pathology diagnostic capacity for testing needed for clinical trial studies.

More detailed information on clinical trials can be obtained here and here.

The laboratory has a robust quality assurance (QA) system which functions to ensure diagnostic and clinical processes and procedures are well controlled, consistent and compliant with current national standards and guidelines. The QA system is overseen by a Quality Assurance Team and the Laboratory Manager and encompasses:

  • Proper handling of clinical samples
  • Criteria for accepting and rejecting samples
  • Sample storage
  • Issuing of results
  • Staff training
  • Control of equipment calibration and maintenance
  • Control of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and laboratory policies.

The laboratory is access controlled and has backup generators to ensure constant power supply in the event of power failures. Our laboratory has capacity to store large number of clinical samples at temperature ranges from 2°C to -135°C and makes use of a Continuous Temperature Monitoring System (CTM) to record and maintain temperature across all fridges and freezers in real-time.
